A very special part of the world. The forest is a mixture of woodland and moorland and no matter how many times I have visited, I always discover something new on my next visit. Such a lovely place.

Great for bikes and very small children AVOID IF GOING FOR A WALK

We came to follow the Gruflo trail with our young mily. The Forrest is popular with a variety of users of all ages, the trail was well signposted. Our year old was able to cycle on some of the trails on his balance bike and thoroughly enjoyed himself. The cafe served basic food which was tasty and the portions were quite big. Dogs were allowed in the seating area outside the cafe.

Me, my mate and his dad all came here for the mountain bike trails! We live in yorkshire so arent troubled by a bit of climbing, but i dont think climbing is the word because all it seemed to be was climbing! There where some amazing downhill sections but sometimes you where climbing up a fire road to go back down one. We do love climbing but not to this extent, otherwise great place for a hard day of shredding!

Owned by the Forestry Commission Hamsterley is a large forest angled more to the leisure side of the Commissions role as opposed to the timber producing side. There are walking and cycle trails, childrens trails and a couple of large play areas. There is a small caf selling hot drinks, soup, toasties a day cake etc. You can follow trails on an App…..rather neglecting the ct that in many parts of the forest mobile reception is poor to non existent!Free to use it gets busy on Bank Holidays and can get overwhelmed but a good natural resource and easily accessible.

I hadnt been to Hamsterley Forest for around years, my memories were of being lost for hours without seeing a soul until we found the right path…..things have def changed. We went for a peaceful walk in the forest, i was gobsmacked by the parking charge, but paid it, expecting to spend the day there, the carpark was so full people were parking all over, and of them were full of bikes.I ended up spending just hours here, which included all the children getting food in the cafe for a hot dog, and for bottles of milk and a hot choc, ouchfortunately I had very small children with me, they loved searching for the gruflo characters and the multitude of play areas, we set off on the . mile walk, and I spent the entire time on alert, bikes and vans were constantly appearing at extremely high speed the van was actually connected with the site and nearly hit one of the children and we had to leap off the road into the mud to accommodate them. With children in tow going down to yo this was not a pleasant or easy thing to do and I was a nervous wreck by the end.So gone are the days of a lovely secluded walk in nature and this is yet another place where commercialism has taken hold and vehicles have taken over….Such a shame, we wont be back great if you have a bike and like to go st
